About the Impact AI Fellowship 2027
The fellowship is offered by HIIG in Berlin. Fellows learn and apply the Impact AI Method to evaluate the social and environmental effects of a real AI use case. The work includes interview preparation, data collection, analysis and a final case assessment report.
Applicants may come from academia, journalism, civil-society organisations, public institutions or companies. Pakistani applicants are not excluded by nationality. A proposed AI project is optional; HIIG can help fellows connect with a suitable case.
Financial Benefits
Each fellow receives a fixed €5,000 stipend for the ten-week programme. HIIG states that this amount includes any tax or social-security costs that may apply in the fellow’s country of origin.
HIIG also supports necessary travel and accommodation for in-person participation on an individual basis and as far as capacity allows. This support is not a universal unlimited travel package. Fellows remain responsible for costs such as visa, health insurance and meals unless HIIG approves exceptional additional assistance.
The programme also provides training, workshops, individual supervision, peer learning, lead authorship of a case report and possible future collaboration or publication.
Programme Structure
- 11 May 2027: mandatory online preparatory session.
- 16–20 August: full-time in-person workshops in Berlin.
- 23 August–1 October: independent research with weekly check-ins and online workshops; remote work is possible.
- 4–8 October: required in-person workshops in Berlin to discuss results.
- 11–22 October: final analysis and report writing.
All fellows must attend the in-person sessions and regular online check-ins. Applicants should confirm that work, study and travel commitments allow participation before applying.
