About the Harvard LEAD Fellowship
The Harvard Global Health Institute and the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health run this one-year leadership fellowship. It is designed for established global health professionals from low- and middle-income countries who will strengthen leadership in their organizations and mentor future women leaders.
The fellowship is open to applicants of all genders and disciplines. A previous fellow from Pakistan is listed by Harvard, but every new applicant must independently meet the current eligibility rules.
Financial Benefits
The in-residence period is financially supported. Harvard states that the award covers visa fees, housing and return flights for the Cambridge stay. Fellows also receive a living stipend for the weeks in residence, including logistical expenses such as daily food and local transportation.
Harvard does not publish a fixed cash amount on the current program page. Applicants should therefore plan from the listed covered items and should not assume reimbursement for costs that the official award does not name.
Fellowship Structure
The fellowship runs for 12 months. The first phase is mostly virtual and has a light time commitment while fellows remain in their jobs. Activities include one-to-one leadership coaching, Harvard faculty mentorship, planning, virtual events and preparation for the U.S. visit.
The spring component includes six weeks in Cambridge, expected in April 2028. Fellows take an executive education course and join leadership workshops, masterclasses, team activities, public-speaking opportunities and independent project work. Employer-approved leave is required only for the in-person period.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants from Pakistan should check every requirement before starting:
- Hold at least a master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Work full-time in global health and have at least 10 years of professional experience beyond education.
- Be currently based or working in a low- or middle-income country and plan to return after the fellowship.
- Show substantial leadership experience and further leadership potential.
- Have full employer support, including permission for six weeks of leave in April 2028.
- Be able to obtain a J-1 visa and live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the in-person period.
- Not have completed a full-time fellowship lasting four months or longer during the two years before arrival at Harvard.
Meeting these conditions permits an application; it does not guarantee selection or a U.S. visa.
Required Documents
- Current CV or résumé.
- Letter of intent of no more than 1.5 pages explaining the applicant’s global health journey and expected impact.
- Four essays, each limited to 2,000 characters: career development, project plan, mentoring plan, and organizational or national impact.
- Letter of institutional commitment confirming support and leave for the Cambridge period.
- Letter of mentor commitment from a professional-development champion.
- Two additional reference letters; at least one must come from the current or most recent professional engagement and must be different from the mentor letter.
How to Apply
- Read the official Harvard LEAD Fellowship page and confirm that your degree, experience and employer support match the current rules.
- Ask your institution, mentor and two referees early. Explain the April 2028 leave requirement and the distinct purpose of each letter.
- Prepare the CV, 1.5-page letter of intent and four character-limited essays.
- Submit through the official Harvard application portal before 11:59 p.m. EST on 15 November 2026.
- Save the confirmation. Harvard expects to notify selected applicants in spring 2027.
Because the deadline is stated in U.S. Eastern Standard Time, Pakistani applicants should submit at least a day early rather than depend on a last-minute time conversion.
