About the MBZUAI Global Research Internship

MGRIP is MBZUAI’s flagship international AI research internship, formerly called UGRIP. It gives undergraduate and master’s students supervised research experience and access to the university’s AI community in Abu Dhabi.

Research can cover computational biology, computer vision, computer science, human-computer interaction, machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, statistics and data science. MBZUAI says the specific 2027 projects will be released in November, so applicants should review the project list again before choosing preferences.

Financial Benefits

MBZUAI describes MGRIP as fully funded. The official support list includes:

  • Accommodation and health insurance.
  • Visa support, airfares and airport transfers.
  • A stipend. The current page does not publish a fixed amount.
  • Social and cultural activities.
  • Access to MBZUAI student facilities.
  • Faculty mentorship and a four-week campus research experience.

The selection letter and participant instructions will control the final travel arrangements and payment conditions. Applicants should not book flights independently unless MBZUAI instructs them to do so.

Programme Structure

The 2027 programme runs from Monday, 7 June through Friday, 2 July. Interns work on an assigned AI research project with faculty guidance, collaborate with an international cohort and take part in academic and community activities.

MGRIP is a short research internship, not a master’s or PhD admission offer. Participants interested in graduate study must apply separately to an MBZUAI degree programme.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be in the penultimate year of a STEM-related undergraduate or master’s degree.
  • Expect to complete the current degree after September 2027.
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • Meet the English requirement with IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, PTE Academic 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced 180, Cambridge C2 Proficiency 200, or Duolingo English Test 120 where its stated access condition applies.
  • Use an approved physical test centre. Home Edition tests are not accepted.
  • Alternatively, qualify for an English waiver under MBZUAI’s rules and provide the prescribed official evidence.

A Pakistani degree taught and assessed entirely in English may support a conditional exemption request if the university registrar issues an official letter on letterhead. MBZUAI decides whether the evidence meets its waiver rule.

Required Documents

  • Registrar-issued enrolment letter showing admission date, programme duration and expected graduation date.
  • Official transcript listing courses, grades and credit hours.
  • Valid English test certificate, or an official registrar letter confirming English as the medium of instruction for a waiver request.
  • Colour passport copy with at least one year of validity.
  • Statement of purpose covering motivation, academic background, achievements, programme goals and intended career path.
  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • Certified English translations for documents issued in another language.

Academic records must carry the required official stamps and signatures. Applications without valid English evidence or acceptable waiver documentation remain incomplete.

How to Apply

  1. Read the official MGRIP 2027 page.
  2. Confirm that the degree is STEM-related, you are in the penultimate year and graduation will be after September 2027.
  3. Arrange the registrar letter, transcript, English proof or waiver letter, passport, CV and statement of purpose.
  4. Review the 2027 project list when MBZUAI releases it in November.
  5. Use the official MBZUAI application portal after it opens on 1 January 2027.
  6. Submit by 28 February 2027 at 5:00 p.m. GST, which is 6:00 p.m. Pakistan time.
