About the MEXT Research Scholarship
The Japanese Government MEXT Research Scholarship supports international graduates who want to conduct research or enter graduate study at a Japanese university. Depending on placement and admission, a recipient can begin as a non-regular research student or enrol in a Master’s, professional graduate or doctoral course.
This page covers the 2027 Embassy Recommendation route in Pakistan. It does not mean every university-recommended MEXT route is closed, because Japanese universities can run separate procedures. Applicants should follow only a current notice from the Embassy, MEXT, Study in Japan or an eligible Japanese university.
The Embassy has completed the Pakistan application stage for 2027. It does not publish a future Pakistan deadline on the current page, so no 2028 opening date should be assumed.
Financial Benefits
The official 2027 Research Scholarship guidelines list:
- JPY 143,000 per month for preparatory education and non-regular research students;
- JPY 144,000 per month for regular Master’s and professional degree students;
- JPY 145,000 per month for regular doctoral students;
- an additional regional allowance of JPY 2,000 or JPY 3,000 per month in designated areas;
- waiver of university entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees under the stated conditions; and
- economy-class travel to and from Japan under the scholarship’s route and timing rules.
The allowance can change with the Japanese Government budget. Grantees must pay some costs themselves, including travel to the departure airport, airport taxes, insurance and baggage expenses. Read the official guidelines rather than assuming every travel or living cost is reimbursed.
Selection Structure
- The Embassy receives complete applications before its Pakistan deadline.
- Only shortlisted candidates are contacted for the first screening, which can include tests and an interview.
- Candidates who pass the first screening seek provisional acceptance from Japanese universities under the MEXT procedure.
- Applicants submit placement preferences and required acceptance material.
- MEXT conducts the final selection and university placement process.
For the closed 2027 Pakistan round, the Embassy says shortlisted candidates have already been contacted. Silence should not be treated as a pending open application opportunity or a request to resubmit documents.
Eligibility Requirements
The 2027 official guidelines required applicants to meet conditions including:
- nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan;
- in principle, a birth date on or after 2 April 1992, subject only to the limited official exceptions;
- an academic background that qualifies the applicant for the intended Master’s or doctoral route at a Japanese graduate school;
- a proposed field connected to the applicant’s previous major or a related field that can be studied in Japan;
- willingness to learn Japanese and adapt to study and life in Japan;
- the prescribed medical fitness certificate; and
- availability to arrive in Japan within the period set for the selected April or autumn term.
The exact academic rule differs for Master’s, doctoral and medicine-related doctoral routes. A future round can change dates or forms, so applicants must use the new call when it is released.
Required Documents
For Pakistan’s 2027 Research Scholarship call, the Embassy listed the following core documents:
- the Embassy’s mark sheet form;
- the prescribed MEXT application form;
- a field of study and research plan;
- attested degree or prospective graduation evidence and complete academic transcripts;
- a recommendation from the university president, dean or academic adviser;
- an abstract of a thesis, if applicable; and
- an employer recommendation, if applicable.
The Embassy required paper documents in a stated order and gave separate submission addresses for Islamabad and Karachi. Do not mail an application now: the 2027 deadline has passed. Use the old checklist only for preparation and replace every form with the version issued for a future round.
How to Apply
New applications cannot be submitted for the 2027 Pakistan round. The correct action now is to confirm the closed status on the Embassy’s official MEXT Research Scholarship page.
- Do not pay an agent or send documents for a closed 2027 application.
- Download the official 2027 guidelines and past examination papers for preparation only.
- Develop a clear research plan related to your previous degree.
- Prepare verified degree, transcript and recommendation records.
- Monitor the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan education page for a future official call.
- When a new round is announced, use its new forms, eligibility date and deadline.
The Embassy states that it does not confirm receipt for every application and contacts only shortlisted candidates. Selection, university acceptance, placement and visa approval are not guaranteed.
