About Knight-Hennessy Scholars

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is Stanford University’s multidisciplinary graduate scholarship and leadership programme. Scholars study in eligible graduate programmes across Stanford’s schools while participating in leadership development and a cross-disciplinary community.

Admission to KHS and admission to Stanford are separate decisions. An applicant must submit both required applications and ultimately be accepted by an eligible full-time Stanford graduate programme.

Financial Benefits

For up to the first three years, depending on degree length, KHS provides:

  • a fellowship applied to tuition and associated fees;
  • a stipend for living and academic expenses;
  • a travel stipend intended to cover one annual economy-class trip to and from Stanford; and
  • a one-time relocation stipend for newly enrolling scholars.

Second- and third-year scholars may apply for supplemental academic-enrichment funding. For programmes longer than three years, funding after the KHS period depends on the Stanford school or department’s standard commitment. Published stipends are taxable, and KHS does not reimburse taxes.

Program Structure

Scholars enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree and join up to three years of KHS leadership programming. Eligible degrees include many MA, MBA, MFA, MPP, MS, JD, MD, DMA, and PhD programmes, but Stanford lists several exclusions on the official eligibility page.

Applicants submit one application to KHS and a separate application to each intended Stanford graduate programme. Degree-programme deadlines can be earlier than Stanford’s general dates, so future applicants must follow the earlier applicable deadline.

Eligibility Requirements

For the now-closed 2027 cohort, applicants needed to:

  • apply to, be accepted by, and enrol in an eligible full-time Stanford graduate programme under one of KHS’s permitted applicant pathways;
  • have earned a first bachelor’s degree or equivalent in January 2020 or later, with a two-year extension for qualifying military service; and
  • meet the chosen Stanford graduate programme’s requirements.

There was no restriction based on citizenship, age, university, field of study, or career aspiration, but the degree-date rule applied. Requirements may change for the 2028 cohort, so use the new call when it opens rather than assuming the 2027 criteria will remain identical.

Required Documents

The 2027 KHS application required:

  • the online application form;
  • a resume;
  • transcripts and any test scores required by the graduate programme;
  • recommendation letters; and
  • short answers and an essay.

The Stanford graduate programme application has its own documents, tests, fees, and deadlines. KHS charged no application fee, but most Stanford graduate programmes do; fee-waiver rules are handled through Stanford Graduate Admissions.

How to Apply

You cannot submit a late application for the 2027 KHS cohort. For the 2028 cohort:

  1. Monitor the official KHS admission page for the June 2027 opening and read the new eligibility rules.
  2. Select an eligible full-time Stanford graduate programme and check its KHS-specific deadline.
  3. Prepare the KHS materials and the separate graduate-programme application.
  4. Submit both applications by their respective deadlines; admission to one does not substitute for the other.
  5. Keep official confirmations and monitor the application portals for requests or invitation-only stages.

Official information: Check the KHS admission status, official eligibility page, and funding details. Do not use a third-party application form.

Pakistani graduate applicants can also review the Clarendon Scholarship guide, the Sabanci University scholarship guide, and the ETH Zurich ESOP guide.
